GRAND LAKE WATERSHED

Our Grand Riverkeeper works on watershed protection, including monitoring for metals pollution due to downstream impacts of the Tri-State Mining District and protecting our land and river from bacteria, nutrient and mercury pollution. He is working with Tribes and other grassroots organizations to protect water quality and wildlife ecology in the watershed. To Top of Page

Mr. Hatley is working with ten Tribes, two EPA Regions, the environmental agencies of three states and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in the two regions that operate in the upper Grand River watershed to address our area's heavy metal pollution. He is also addressing the need for Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality to adopt stricter regulations for mercury contamination from coal-fired power plants. Our streams are already polluted and the fish are unsafe to eat. To Top of Page

As part of a broad grassroots movement, our Grand Riverkeeper has helped stop two new permit proposals for large coal-fired power plants in the watershed. However, the Grand River Dam Authority is proposing a new coal-fired plant in the watershed and since the Dam Authority does not require public comment hearings or a permit, this plant will be hard to fight. In the image above it is obvious there are many more discharge facilities in Missouri and Kansas than in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Industrial poultry factories are an area of great concern for the future of our watershed. Missouri’s poultry industry and wastewater discharges from communities in Kansas are polluting the Neosho River and Grand Lake. As a result, streams that were once clear are now so green you cannot see the bottom.
